River Rejuvenation Project
The aim of this project was for IndusInd Bank Ltd. to support the Government of Maharashtra’s (GoM) new flagship programme named Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan to make Maharashtra a drought-free state by 2019. The project involves deepening and widening of streams, construction of cement and earthen check dams, improve nullahs and digging of farm ponds with a target to make 5,000 villages free of water scarcity every single year.
IndusInd Bank Ltd. (IBL) decided to refurbish Ghigewadi Dam on River Vasana which is a tributary of River Krishna in Koregaon Taluka of Maharashtra’s Satara district. The original Ghigewadi stone dam was built over a century ago by the British but lay in total disrepair and in a derelict condition.
The Centre for Environmental Research and Education (CERE) was appointed by IBL to coordinate and supervise the project on a turnkey basis by consulting with every associated stakeholder including the District Administration, Forestry Dept., Irrigation Dept., local Implementing Agency (IA), Public Works Dept. (PWD) registered contractor and local community.
