Rainwater Harvesting at SRPF Group 5, Daund

Daund is a taluka in Pune, Maharashtra that faces severe water shortage. Various news outlets have brought light to the issue. Parts of Daund have been declared as drought-prone areas by the state government as most of these areas failed to receive adequate rain during the monsoon season. Hence having a means to collect rainwater and rejuvenate the groundwater is the need of the hour.

To improve the situation at the campus of State Reserve Police Force Unit 5 in Daund, CERE has set up a Rainwater Harvesting and Greywater Recycling project with the support of the Hinduja Foundation. The project is being executed in two phases to accomplish the following:
– 9 ponds, with capacities ranging from 1 lakh litres to 20 lakh litres, were constructed, ensuring a robust water collection system. These ponds serve as reservoirs to store rainwater during the monsoon season.
– Overflow trenches were dug out to connect the ponds, building a network of recharge ponds .
– 17 recharge wells were created to augment the groundwater table.

As a result, the project will harvest an impressive 16.2 million litres of water each monsoon season. The initiative benefits not only the 3,000 residents and 1,000 non-residents at the SRPF campus but also local flora and fauna across 40 acres of agricultural land and 20 acres of forest land.
This large-scale effort will have a lasting impact on the region’s water security, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient water system for Daund.
